Village of Maritsa in located in southwestern part of Bulgaria, with 670 permanent residents. It falls under the municipality of Samokov city also it’s in Sofia district. Distance from Borovets resort, only 13 km. The village is situated at the foot of Rila Mountain and the upper reaches of the Maritsa River, on road E82: Samokov - Borovets - Dolna Banya - Kostenets between ski resort Borovets and Dolna Banya city. The climate is medium continental, the summer temperatures are medium typical semi-mountain climate.
In the past, the village was called Mahala. The village appears near the iron extraction center Samokov in the middle of the 16 century. Is association with iron extraction the village is one of the first manufacturers in the region, supported by the mining laws of Suleiman I. The development of iron extraction in the second half of 16 century leads to expansion of the village and economic development. In the period the church of saint Nikola is build with valuable wall paintings and textures from the 16 century and the first half of the19 century, declared in 1969 a monument of the Bulgarian art.
